It is merely towards the end up it starts to fall apart, although slap-up finale rescues they about ‘red’. Excellently staged and you may intelligently dialogued, it has zero high complications in traditions off its very unattractive identity.” [ 8 ]

The fresh new film’s blogger and you can manager, Robert Rossen, sets up a beneficial multidimensional chess online game, getting mortal bet, between Johnny, his boss (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Received), good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and an effective scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever cousin (Nina Foch) has worked at casino and dated a great corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The newest caustically epigrammatic software, the latest cast’s suavely controlled body language regarding love and you will threat, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and fashionably cocky photographs (including his political conscience) get this pugnacious but really outlined spectacle a hidden vintage of one’s style.” [ ten ]

Cobb, once the an authorities inspector, also in the get . While the area observe a common pattern, brand new characterizations try new while the shows good enough so you’re able to overbalance. Dialogue try terse and topical, avoiding the sentimental, phoney touching. Strange camera basics show up on occasion in order to heighten appeal and you may briefly arrest the interest. Good teamplay of the Robert Rossen, doubling as movie director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, amazing writer and you can representative music producer, plus supports making this a silky design.” [ 11 ]

It is mostly a question of viewing Mr. Powell undergo their paces smartly while you are a massive shed away from actors and you can actresses promote your typical help. Evelyn Keyes takes on the good absolutely nothing woman just who brings forth the newest best in your and you will Ellen Drew ‘s the easy and you will slinky vixen just who gets your for the jams. Thomas Gomez was oily while the villain and Lee J. Cobb do another ready tour just like the a tired police inspector just who in the long run shuts the case. A great deal of consuming and you may puffing is accomplished because of the every concerned.” [ twelve ]
